Storms can be scary, storms can be disorienting, and they definitely make it hard to see what's right in front of you.


Discussion Questions


Start Talking 

  • What storms have you faced in your life?

    • Did that storm draw you closer to God or push you away from Him?

  • Have you watched someone else face a storm in their life and been amazed at their faith through the storm?

    • What was it about their faith that impacted you?

    • Do you think you would have the same kind of faith if you were in a similar situation?

  • Why do you think that some people’s faith becomes stronger in a storm and others walk away from God?

  • Read Matthew 7:24-27

    • What two things does verse 24 say a wise man does?

    • What happened to the house built on the rock when the storm came?

    • What does verse 26 tell us about a foolish man, what he does not do?

    • Does the foolish man hear the words?

    • What happened to the foolish man's house when the same storm came?

What Now

  • The Sand: My Life, My Thinking

    • “The sand could represent any number of things that you think are worth basing your life on: your career, your children, your spouse, your routine, your comfort, your social status, your circumstances.  But when we base our life on something, we tend to make decisions based on that, we begin to find our identity in that, we begin to have a mindset to protect it because we have placed so much value in it.”

    • What “sand” things have you been building your life upon?

    • Are these all bad things?

    • If any of these things in your life changed/shifted (work, status, where you live, social status, kid’s achievements, etc.), would your house fall?

  • The Rock: Jesus’ Life, His Teaching

    • Jesus tells us to not just hear his teaching, but to put it into practice.

    • Do you struggle with putting into practice the teachings that you have heard?

    • What areas of your life do you need to build, rebuild, or reinforce?

    • What spiritual disciplines, habits, rhythms do you need to implement in your life to help you build a life on Jesus and His teachings? I.e. Scripture, Prayer, Community, Worship


Because Jesus was clear, storms are part of life and He wants you to be ready, He's given you the blueprint of how to be ready - and how to stay connected to them.
